Time Flies!

Another week gone!
Spent the weekend on the Cape West Coast. Kulula.com had cheap tickets, so off to the Cape for the weekend. Decided to visit the West Coast as I haven't been up there for many years.
One thing is obvious - developers can spoil any coast line in the world!
Where there used to be a few holiday shacks there are now kilometers of stark white buildings. No wonder the Black Oystercatcher is having a hard time surviving - it's breeding beaches have all been turned into housing estates!
Big fancy estates going up right next to fish processing plants. Anybody who bought off plan is going to be in for a smelly surprise when they arrive to stay in their new beach front holiday home.
Rocher Pans were a disappointment - No water , so no birds.

Antarctica

Show to a small group last week went off well. All were (hopefully) suitably impressed by the images to plan a trip themselves. Each group of people who see it seem to have a different set of questions. Everybody asks "How cold was it?"

New Nikon

Digital cameras just keep getting better! Nikon have just annouced the Coolpix P80. Nikon's latest P series superzoom, is built around a powerful 18x zoom lens also equipped with Nikon's Optical Vibration Reduction technology.

An 18x Zoom-NIKKOR lens that covers focal lengths from 27-486mm (35mm format equivalent). Image sensor shift VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization rounds out the set by adding extra reassurance that the results will be sharper and clearer.

Outstanding imaging ability begins with 10.1 effective megapixels and new digital image processing software that gives fine detail and subtle tones, whilst delivering quick response, and maintaining image quality and clarity. The camera has extended light sensitivity settings as high as ISO 6400.

Like most new cameras the P80 has many features that allow control over almost all aspects of how the camera takes a picture for you.

Should be on sale in the USA in May.

Busy Week!

Been a busy week. No time to blog. Don't know where the week has gone.
Doing another presentation of my Antarctica show tonight. Just a small one to a group of friends so should be fun.

Getting into the habit

Easy for all you existing blogger but as a newbie it is tough getting into this blogging routine.

Filling in the background. From the Osborne, each change was a step up and forward. Today a computer at home, one at the office and an HP laptop to carry between the two and whilst away. Storage space that wasn't even dreamt of in the Osborne days. I've lost track but I think that between the 3 machine I must have about 1500 Gb. (I know a couple of photographers who have more than double that!)

One of my original 35mm cameras (Nikon F - made in 1969) still sitting in my cupboard and it still works. Not that I have bought a roll of film in 5 or 6 years.

Totally digital these days.

When photographing birds it is wonderful to be able to rattle of 30 or 40 shots knowing that there is no extra cost in doing so. Back in film days there was no way I would have used a whole roll on one bird. The 1.5x factor on each lens is great for birds and wildlife as well.

On a recent trip to Antarctica I took nearly 9000 images, deleted about 2500 whilst there and have now edited the remaining 6500 down to just over 500. I shudder to think of trying to do that with film.

Photography & Nature

Enough about power cuts!
Time to get on with what I really what this blog to be about:
Nature, Birds (Feathered Kind) and photography.

A bit of background. I have been facinated by computers from the early days of desktops. Back in the days of Basic and then CP/M. I started with a single board computer that used a cassette tape recorder as its means of storage before progressing to an Osborne. Wow it had a 10Meg Harddrive half the size of a phone book! It was portable if you had been on a Charles Atlas weight lifting course.

Progress has brought us to the point where our phones almost have the same computing power as the space shuttle and digital camera are almost fool proof.

Bird and wild life photography with digital is wonderful.

No Power

Another of those "Welcome to Darkest Africa" days. Thanks ESKOM - 6.5 hours without power! How does one keep a business going never mind make a profit.

Power Cuts

Confusion hardly describes what is going on in the average consumers mind over power cuts. Tuesday 10h00 to 14h00 - definte power cuts says Eskom. It is now 11h15 and the lights are still on!
Maybe someone in Eskom's PR department is a budding novelist and they are testing the public to see how long they can be kept on edge and trying to guess when the next power cut will be.

April 1st

April 1st? Is this a good day to start a blog?
